Bereaved parents criticize Kentucky DUI laws

Losing a loved one is never easy, especially when they are taken from you in an untimely fashion. Knowing that their life has been taken by the irresponsible or malicious acts of another is devastating and it is understandable that you may feel lost and in need of answers. In other cases you could even feel inclined to seek justice. Whatever the case, it is not something you should have to handle alone.

In Louisville, Kentucky two parents are fighting to come to terms with the tragic consequences of a drunk driving accident that occurred in June 2014. The couple lost their 17-year-old daughter in the crash, after her vehicle was impacted by that of a man who was later convicted of DUI and murder.

The man charged with the offense was given a life sentence by the jury. He is also reported to have had six prior convictions for DUI crimes. Since the sad event, the victim's parents have been campaigning to have Kentucky's lookback period for such offenses increased to 10 years. Currently, it stands at five.

Incidents like this are devastating for all concerned, but sadly they are far from infrequent. Every year, countless families lose loved ones to the thoughtless actions of drunk drivers, leaving them with a void in their lives that never truly goes away.

If you have been injured in a drunk driving accident or you have lost someone close to you as a result of such an incident, an attorney may be invaluable. He or she can advise you on the steps you can take if you plan to file an insurance claim or take legal action against the driver in question, and may be able to assist you with your case.
