Get familiar with the roads to keep yourself safe

When you're on the roads, it's important that you do everything you can to share the roads safely. The last thing anyone wants is to get into an accident because he or she wasn't paying attention or because another driver, cyclist or pedestrian wasn't watching where he or she was going.

Fortunately, there are literally dozens of ways to keep yourself and others safe on the roads. From keeping your eyes on the roads to putting away electronics, every little bit helps.

When in Rome...

Remember the old saying, "when in Rome, do like the Romans?" This applies to staying safe on the roads, too. If you're a cyclist or motorcyclist, make sure you follow the rules of the road in the same way as others. You should ride in the right-hand lane or a bike lane if you're a cyclist. You have a right to be on the roads, but you don't want to take any actions that could put you in harm's way. Don't ride against traffic, and don't use sidewalks.

Another good thing to remember is that many people in the area are familiar with the roads. If you're not, you need to make sure you get familiar with your route before you leave home. With Google Maps, Apple Maps and other services, it's easier than ever to know the road verbally and visually before you go in or on your vehicle.

No matter what you're riding or driving, it's up to you to keep yourself and others safe. If everyone takes their time and is prepared, crashes can be prevented.
