3 children hurt when drunk driver plows into playground

Three kids were enjoying themselves at William Harrison Park, never knowing that their day would end with an emergency trip to the hospital. That's exactly how things panned out, though, when an alleged drunk driver slammed into the playground equipment. Reports claim his vehicle was left tangled in that equipment in the wake of the crash.

Those reports also claim that he was speeding, and police say he passed out behind the wheel. He wasn't even conscious as his vehicle went out of control. When they did a blood test after the fact, they found that his blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was a stunning .301. The legal limit is .08, and he was almost four times over that limit.

The driver was taken to a hospital for medical treatment, rather than being instantly arrested. However, he woke up and quickly checked himself out of the hospital in an apparent effort not to get arrested. Police officers kept pursuing him on the Louisville charges, and they found him in Lee County, Florida.

People who live in the area want to stop more accidents from happening. While that clearly begins with cutting down on drunk driving, residents also said that speeding played a huge role -- and it's something they see all too often near the playground. They're hoping to install speed bumps in an effort to slow traffic down when kids are in the area, even when those drivers are sober.

For a parent, an accident like this is a worst nightmare. In the aftermath of such a crash, it's critical for parents to know all of the legal options they may have to seek compensation for medical bills and other costs.
