Expect increased DUI patrols over holidays in Kentucky

The Kentucky State Police (KSP) and the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) want to remind traveling motorists that law enforcement will be out in force this holiday season. Their number one goal is to prevent drunk driving.

The executive director said that while many of the celebrations underway this holiday season will involve alcohol, motorists need to remember that "drunken driving-related crashes are 100-percent preventable. It just makes sense to plan for a designated driver before the party begins."

The campaign called "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" will continue through Jan. 1, 2018. Gas stations, restaurants and bars in areas where drunk driving crash numbers are high are sporting signs with Santa reminding people that "He sees you when you're drinking."

Federal grant money from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is used to increase patrols during the festive season. NHTSA reports that an increased law enforcement presence on the roads can reduce the number of people killed by drunk drivers by up to 20 percent.

In the past five years, Kentucky has had 25 deaths due to drunk driving and 327 injuries. Those deaths and fatalities occurred between Christmas and New Year's.

For those who have lost a loved one or who have been injured because of a drunk driver, seeking compensation is one way to hold the drunk driver accountable for his or her actions. An attorney with experience in pursuing compensation on behalf of drunk driving victims can provide the information you need on your legal options. You may be able to secure compensation for your medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
