Semitruck and car accident equals fatality

When a semitruck collides with a car, it is not surprising that the result is one or more fatalities. This past Wednesday on I-64 near Frankfort, Kentucky, that is exactly what happened.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff, an 18-wheeler veered across the median and struck a passenger vehicle. At the time of the news report, not much information was given except that the car was hit head-on, and the driver of the car perished in the accident. An investigation is underway to determine the cause.

In this case, not knowing why the semi crossed the median, we cannot say if the driver was guilty of any wrongdoing; however, when a fatality occurs in any vehicle accident, it can open the door for a wrongful death lawsuit, especially if the at-fault driver is found to be negligent. That is why it is crucial that the details of the accident are investigated.

Losing a loved one unexpectedly is never easy, but if it is caused by the negligence of another, it is even harder to digest. A child may have lost a parent, a husband or wife may have lost a spouse or someone may have lost a sibling. There is usually a "loss" to someone. In many instances, the loss exceeds relationships and factors into other parts of the living relatives' lives.

For instance, if the deceased is the breadwinner in the family, there can be major lifestyle changes. Some family members may experience despair, resulting in mental issues such as depression. Those mental issues can not only affect their everyday lives, but can affect the lives of others. In addition, there may be added expenses, such as emergency medical treatment and funeral expenses.

An attorney can discuss options and provide help when a family has been devastated by the accidental death of a loved one. If someone was negligent, the negligent party should be responsible for the damage inflicted on the family. A financial settlement cannot take the place of a loved one, but it can help family members move on with their lives.
