Traffic deaths increased in 2016 to highest levels since 2007

Traffic deaths in the United States increased in 2016 to the highest levels since 2007, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT). According to data, 37,461 people lost their lives on the roads of the United States in 2016. This number represents a 5.6 percent increase from 2015, which saw an 8.4 percent increase from 2014.

Experts claim that an increase in reckless driving, distracted driving and overall miles driven contributed to the higher death toll on the roads in 2016. The data from the study shows that the total number of miles driven in 2016 increased by 2.6 percent when compared to 2015. There was also a jump in dangerous activities such as not wearing seatbelts, drinking and driving and speeding.

Thirty percent of all the traffic deaths in 2016 involved motorcyclists and pedestrians. These two groups of people are the most unprotected on the roads and pedestrians have the least amount of protection around them when near cars and trucks.

When the total number of traffic deaths is broken down to a daily total, more than 100 people died on the roads of the United States per day in 2016. Since 2009, large truck fatalities have increased by a staggering 28 percent.

Losing a loved one in a Jefferson fatal motor vehicle accident is devastating. Working with an experienced wrongful death attorney can help your case and help you fight for your family's rights when dealing with the negligence of another person.
