How to spot a drunk driver in Kentucky

Drunk driving is a problem that millions of people face each year across the country. One drunk driver impacts everyone on the road around them and even pedestrians walking on the sidewalks. Law enforcement officials do their best to curb this issue, but the problem still exists. Here's how you can spot a drunk driver in Kentucky.

The most common sign of a drunk driver is when the vehicle being driven is weaving in and out of traffic. Along the same lines, a vehicle struggling to stay on the proper side of the center lines. These are indicative of a drunk driver, someone whose mental ability has been weakened.

A drunk driver might also exhibit the following signs when operating a vehicle:

  • Tailgating
  • Quick acceleration
  • Erratic braking
  • Stopping without reason
  • Driving at night without the headlights
  • Making illegal or abrupt turns
  • Driving anywhere other than an area designated for vehicles
  • Driving on the wrong side of the road
  • Almost hitting another vehicle, curb or other object

If you ever come across a possible drunk driver, he or she might be operating his or her vehicle more than 10 mph under the posted speed limit. This is a common sign because the brain cannot process speed when impaired.

Never attempt to get the attention of a drunk driver. Safely acquire a description of the vehicle, such as the make, model and license plate number and report it to the police when you are safely off the road.
