Commercial truck accidents: primary causes

Commercial trucks (i.e. big rigs, tractor-trailers, semi's and other large vehicles) compose a small percentage of the driven vehicles on any given day. But, due to their size and that many of them are on freeways and highways, they are involved in a disproportionate number of fatal accidents, about their numbers of the road. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) released a study analyzing the causes of commercial truck accidents and how best to prevent them. This post will go over those findings and how they may impact you.

The study reviewed 963 crashes spread across 17 dates. For each collision, the FMCSA gathered around 1,000 factors, including the condition of the truck driver, the condition of other drivers, the condition of the vehicles after the crash, their behavior, roadway factors, weather conditions, etc. The study identified three major critical events that were related to large trucks.

First, the study found that 32 percent of large truck accidents were caused when they ran out of lane (either merging onto a lane or forced off road). Second, the study found that 29 percent of accidents were caused when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The driver could lose control for a variety of reasons including shifting cargo, poor road conditions, system failure, or traveling too fast for the conditions. Finally, the study noted that 22 percent of crashes were caused when they rear-ended another vehicle.

Semi-trucks crash for a variety of reasons. If you are involved in an accident with a truck, you should contact a lawyer at your earliest opportunity ? you could have an actionable claim for personal injury. These accidents often result in severe injuries it is thus imperative that you get sufficient compensation to cover your medical expenses. You should not have to pay for your medical bills; it wasn't your fault. A lawyer can help you get the money you deserve, to cover your costs.
