How common is drunk driving?

We all know about the issue of drunk driving in the United States. We hear the facts so often that it becomes easy to forget about how serious the consequences can be. However, the truth remains that every year there are parents, sons and daughters, and loved ones that are permanently affected by a driver's decision to get behind the wheel while intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol. By looking at the statistics that MADD has taken the time to compile from various well-respected sources more closely, we can realize just how serious of an issue we're facing.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, about one-third of all drunk drivers who were convicted or arrested of drunk driving were found to be repeat offenders.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that, every day in America, another 28 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Over 1.2 million drivers were arrested in 2011 for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. The NHA states that about a quarter of car crashes in which a teen dies involve an underage drinking driver.

There are a number of other statistics that make up the information that has been collected on drunk driving. However, this is enough for us to see just how much of an impact this is having on human life. Habitual drunk drivers are one of the biggest hurtles that we have to overcome in order to make our roads safe. If you or a loved one has suffered in one of these accidents, you're probably scared, upset, and not sure what you can do.

If you need any legal advice regarding an issue of this nature, you need to speak to a qualified, practicing attorney who specializes in drunk driving accidents. Only they can guide you and inform you of your rights and possible action that you can take.
