Drunk driving accidents affect people of all ages

All year round, the roads of Kentucky can be very busy and often dangerous. This is amplified during the holiday season when many drivers are preoccupied and rushing about. All too many even choose to take a chance on driving drunk. Sadly, it is all too easy to make a mistake when intoxicated and when this happens, everyone else on the road pays the price.

According to statistics from the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility, 2012 saw 168 fatalities from drunk driving in Kentucky. That's more than three every week. Furthermore, one in every eight fatalities was under the age of 21. This means a young life ended as a result of alcohol impairment on the roads every 17 to 18 days.

Although the numbers show a decline in the issue compared with previous years, the figures are still shocking. Furthermore, 73.9 percent of repeat offenders under the influence and involved in fatal crashes had a BAC of more than 0.14 percent. Sadly, many drunk drivers manage to regain their license after a period of time, if they lose it at all.

It is important to report drunk driving incidents and any other accidents on the road that cause injury or damage to property. Only by cracking down on those responsible is it possible to make the roads of Kentucky safer and ensure the statistics continue to show a decline in fatalities. An attorney may be able to assist you if you choose to seek compensation for your injuries or make a claim on your insurance.
