How common are drunk driving accidents?

Driving while intoxicated is extremely irresponsible. Sadly, it is an offense of which all too many drivers in Kentucky are guilty. Worse still, it is not only themselves that they endanger with their actions, but everyone else around them, whether in their vehicle or on the roads they drive along. The cost of these accidents can be tragically high, with victims suffering serious injuries or even death.

In a previous article, we saw how law enforcement officials in Kentucky have been working to combat this problem. Initiatives such as this one are vital for the reduction and prevention of these horrific accidents that all too often tear families apart. In 2012, almost a third of vehicle traffic fatalities were found to have been caused by drunk driving. According to statistics presented by the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility, that was an estimated 10,322 deaths from accident in which a driver had a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or more.

Even so, these figures reflect a decrease of 64 percent since records began in 1982. This is a positive step, but the figures remain alarming. Statistics suggest that in 2012, there was a fatality every 51 minutes on average involving drunk driving.

It is a horrifying thing to think about, especially when you realize that your loved ones could easily be on the roads with such drivers. If you or someone close to you comes to harm because of a drunk driver, it is vital to stand up for your rights. By challenging such irresponsible drivers, you may be able to prevent them causing harm to others. Furthermore, you could secure compensation to help cover the cost of your recovery.
