What are the risks facing motorcyclists on the roads?

In Kentucky, many people choose to travel using a motorcycle. Furthermore, motorcycling is something that people sometimes become very passionate about. However, like many things, it comes with its risks. Accidents can happen to anyone, no matter what manner of vehicle they are using. However, motorcyclists generally lack the level of protection that people in enclosed vehicles may have.

So what can be done about this problem? Sadly, it may be impossible to eliminate motorcycle accidents completely. However, it can be helpful to be aware of the potential risks faced by motorcyclists on America's roads. They are many and varied, as is explained here, but among them are the following:

  • A motorcycle's front end can sometimes experience instability at higher speeds. This wobbling could make the motorcycle difficult to control and can cause accidents.
  • As they are smaller than most other vehicles, motorcycles can easily be hidden by other vehicles or even bad weather. This can make them harder for other vehicles to detect.
  • Hazards that may seem fairly inconsequential to drivers of larger vehicles can sometimes pose a serious threat to motorcyclists. Some examples of such hazards are: ruts in the road, debris, oil slicks, potholes and puddles.

Of course, every accident is different and often a motorcycle accident is not the fault of the rider, particularly in cases where the crash involved a second vehicle. About two-thirds of accidents involving a motorcycle and another vehicle are brought about by the other vehicle interfering with the motorcycle's right of way. We saw a similar incident here, when a driver reportedly drifted into oncoming traffic, colliding with and killing a motorcyclist.

If you are a motorcyclist, it is important to be aware of potential dangers. Furthermore, if you are harmed by a negligent driver, you may want to look into the possibility of a compensation claim. An attorney can advise you on your options and may be able to help you pursue a fair payout.
