With motorcycle wreck behind him, Petrino returns to Louisville

You would have to try really hard in order to not hear the words "Bobby Petrino" around Louisville the past couple of days. The infamous football coach -- who made a name for himself at the University of Louisville from 2003-2006 -- is back with the Cardinals after some controversial career stops in the National Football League and the University of Arkansas. In Atlanta, he quit 13 games into his first season as coach (causing some uproar from players and fans), and then a storm of controversy followed him to the University of Arkansas.

We won't get into the particulars there, but needless to say the phrases "Bobby Petrino" and "motorcycle accident" are forever linked.

Of particular import to this new story is a famous image of Petrino after he had been involved in that motorcycle accident. Many internet circles use this image to mock Petrino -- but that is not our intent here. Just look at the injuries he suffered: facial abrasions, scarring and a neck injury, and the image doesn't even show the other injuries he likely suffered across his torso, extremities and lower body.

The reason this is important is because Petrino's motorcycle accident was seemingly "minor" relative to other motorcycle accidents. And yet look at the toll it took on his body. Motorcycle accidents are extremely serious because they don't leave victims with minor scrapes or bruises that are common in many other accidents -- they leave them with serious, catastrophic or even fatal injuries. If the accident was caused by a negligent driver, then the injured motorcyclist certainly has a case to have his or her medical bills (and other associated injuries, conditions or damages) covered through a civil lawsuit against the reckless driver.
